What: Washington Competitive Speech Camps are events calibrated to bring individuals' speaking ability and confidence to a higher level. There are three separate sessions that this program will be putting on: the Basic Speech Camp, the Speech Intensive and the Debater's Speaking Intensive advanced camps.
The Basic Camp: The main camp, which will take place in Lynnwood, will be a four day event focusing on speech basics and techniques. This event is designed for students whose experience levels range from novice through varsity entering their third year of speaking. Sessions will be lead and taught by experienced and successful members of the local speech and debate communities. Parent are welcome to come and take part in a parent orientation and in observing some of the student sessions, but we urge parents to remember that one of the major parts of this camp is helping students to build confidence in public speaking; a major foundation of which is camaraderie and confidence in a "team spirit" built with their fellow students. This is largely a Varsity and Alumni run event, focusing on giving expert input and allowing participants to grow in this vital area of their lives. (One or more responsible parents will be present at all times.)
There will also be a scheduled orientation for newer parents and other interested adults discussing:
- All the whats and whys about speech with a Q&A session.
- A highly recommended session for more experienced parents discussing:
1. Why students should participate in all areas of the speech arena
2. What does it mean to speak well? (e.g. values, philosophy of communication, message, audience)
3. How best to write a speech ballot
4. How best to help your student at home
5. Why speech is important to debaters
The Speech Intensive Advanced Workshops: If you are a third-year (entering your fourth year) competitor or have qualified to a national tournament (NCFCA Nationals or NITOC in a non-limited preparation speech event) and are seeking to take their speaking ability to the next level, there is a separate opportunity with Puget Sound Speech Camps to explore and learn more advanced theory, judge connection and fine tuning speeches. These events will be a series of one day meetings during the later part of the coming summer, to be determined by availability of those involved. Rough drafts/cuts of speeches are strongly requested in order to participate for the greatest degree of benefit. This is a time to get serious about the coming season and to get a head-start on the competition at a national level. For more questions or to request an exception to the eligibility requirements please contact the website administrator: pugetsoundspeechcampregister@gmail.com, who reserves the right to decide with camp leadership the granting or lack thereof for exceptions.
The Debate Speakers Intensive Workshops: This is an opportunity for all varsity debaters to come and receive training and critique in the realm of speaking, particularly for debate rounds. This is a highly recommended course for everyone who is seeking to compete at the national level. A debater's brain and thought process is not enough to succeed; it needs a host of presentation skills and speaking ability to be a high level debater. Feel free to contact us for more information.
